Suppose a mercury pool of 1 cm2 area is immersed in a 0.1 M sodium perchlorate solution. How much charge (order of magnitude) would be required to change its potential by 1 mV? How would this be affected by a change in the electrolyte concentration to 10-2M? Why?

Mercury will undergo oxidation (removal of electrons)
Hg2++2e– gives Hg, Eo = -ve value
Sodium will undergo reduction (accepts electrons)
Eo = +ve value
If the concentration of electrolyte is increased, the reaction will be shifted to left side, and Eo value be most positive.
